Kino Lorber has released the Arthur Dong Collection, a 3-disc collection of ten films by Arthur Dong. In the Blu-ray collection are four hours of bonus features that include shorts, featurettes, additional interviews, outtakes, and trailers. The set also includes a 12-page booklet with an essay by film critic Alonso Duralde, and a filmography gallery.
With over 150 awards to his name, the full scope of Oscar®-nominee Arthur Dong’s storytelling mastery is brought to light in this special edition release of groundbreaking films that explore the Asian American and LGBTQ experience. Distinguished by his intensely compassionate and wonderfully crafted stories, this collection of critically acclaimed and award-winning films, starting with his first film Public produced at age 16, powerfully illustrates the many sides and faces of the Asian American and gay rights struggle in America.
Under the supervision of Kino Lorber’s Director of Media Productions and Operations, Robert Sweeney, and with the expertise of key collaborators, the Arthur Dong Collection presents the finest editions of Dong’s films available to date:
- UCLA Film & Television Archive spearheaded stunning 4K and 2K restorations of Forbidden City, USA, Sewing Woman, and Coming Out Under Fire — the latter supervised by IndieCollect.
- Sound virtuoso Joe Milner re-mixed the analogue tracks for Coming Out Under Fire, Forbidden City, USA, and Sewing Women, ensuring pristine digital audio.
- Bret Wood, Producer of Archival Releases at Kino Lorber, elevated the original standard-definition video of Hollywood Chinese to high-definition standards.
- For Public, Bret worked with Blackhawk/Film Preservation Associates to restore a 1970 Super-8 print to 2K, while maestro Mark Adler created a stirring new score.
- Composer Gary Stockdale provided swinging big band music cues to replace songs with expired licenses in Forbidden City, USA.
